Writing memoir requires truth and untamed emotion. We must dig deep, excavate. Find the words that express what we've kept inside for so long that it feels as if it's part of our body, velcroed to our very soul.

The impulse to write about your life, to share what you’ve learned through sorrow and triumph, is powerful and filled with purpose. Yet memoir writing requires careful crafting, a special alchemy to turn diary entries into literature.

But how? What elevates everyday experiences into a coherent story? And in a lifetime of endless moments and memories, where do you choose to begin?

Ah...that’s the pivot point.

Find the right key, and the door will swing open.

This class for men and women will walk with you through an entire year, helping you shape—and finish—a memoir with craft and intention so it works for the reader as well as for you.

Writing a memoir can be therapy. But ultimately, to be marketable, it has to have a point.

Making that shift means establishing a universal theme for your memoir, then crafting a great read from your life events—a story that will inspire, enrage, support, inflame, motivate or provoke readers to feel something real and meaningful.

To help you do this with unique and ongoing support, we’re offering A YEAR OF MEMOIR, starting mid-January 2022 and going straight through December 2022. Fifty weeks of guidance, two hours a week, so that you can start and/or write and finish your memoir.

During the year, we'll bring in authors like Gina Frangello, author of the national bestseller Blow Your House Down; Julie Barton, author of the New York Times bestseller Dog Medicine; and other magnificent women and men whose memoirs left us breathless.

To help you understand the publishing world, we'll bring in agents like Andy Ross and Laura Mazer, plus publishers like Lisa Sharkey (HarperCollins) and Brooke Warner (She Writes Press), and a few other surprise guests along the way.

In addition, you’ll meet with a small group outside of class to find support and share feedback throughout the year.

We want you to bring your words to life. With the help of authors, agents, publishers, and creative folks during this extraordinary journey, we know you will be encouraged, enlightened, and inspired to succeed. You'll have opportunities to read your work in progress, get professional feedback, and hear constructive criticism along with priceless advice from our guest instructors.

Fifty weeks is a major commitment. It's a commitment to your work, your words, your dreams. At Story Summit Writer's School, we're completely committed to your work. We believe that investing in your life and writing reaps extraordinary returns and dividends, and we will be with you each step of the way.
