About the Event
Please join us for a special discussion of Keeper of Lost Children, the latest book by Sadeqa Johnson.
In Keeper of Lost Children, New York Times bestselling author Sadeqa Johnson tells a powerful story of how one woman’s vision in post–World War II Germany binds three lives across time. In the 1950s, Ethel Gathers, the wife of an American officer, is moved to action after discovering an orphanage of abandoned mixed-race children born to German women and Black American GIs. Her determination echoes through the life of Ozzie Phillips, a young Black soldier whose relationship in Germany leaves a lasting mark, and Sophia Clark, a teenager in Maryland whose search for the truth reshapes her understanding of herself. Spanning continents and generations, the novel explores how buried secrets and past choices ripple across time, revealing how love—in its many forms, from familial and parental to forbidden and self-love—can be transcendent and leave a lasting legacy.
Sadeqa Johnson is a New York Times bestselling author of five novels, including the Reese’s Book Club pick The House of Eve. Her work has earned critical acclaim and numerous honors, including the Hurston/Wright Foundation Legacy finalist, BCALA Literary Honoree, the Library of Virginia’s Literary People’s Choice Award, and the Phillis Wheatley Book Award. Her novels, such as Yellow Wife and The House of Eve, have been recognized by Oprah Magazine, Target Book Club, and Goodreads Choice Awards, and have been celebrated for their powerful explorations of history, identity, and resilience. Her latest novel, Keeper of Lost Children, continues her tradition of richly layered storytelling. Originally from Philadelphia, Sadeqa lives near Richmond, Virginia, with her husband and three children.
In this lively discussion with Sadeqa, we'll learn her motivations for writing the book and her path to publishing.
