About the Event

Please join us for a special discussion of Victoria Ward and the Gilded Age of the Hawaiian Kingdom, the debut book by Summiteer Joy Ogawa.

Joy, a native of Hilo, Hawaii, has written a historical fiction of one of the Islands’ most influential women. In 1870, Ward, a woman of royal Hawaiian blood, purchased 100 acres on the island of Oahu with her husband Curtis. The couple established a successful farm and built a sprawling Southern-style house for their growing family.

After Curtis’ untimely death, Ward ran the enterprise while raising seven daughters, becoming a powerful businesswoman in her own right. At the same time, she worked to preserve her culture and maintain a legacy for future Hawaiians.

In this lively discussion with Joy, we’ll learn her motivations for writing the book, the extensive research it required, and her path to publishing.

We're pleased to present this special free event as part of our Story Summit Book & Film Club, celebrating Summiteers and their writing.

This event is free. Please register for the Zoom link.
