Formatting a Screenplay
September 21st - September 22nd 2022
8 to 10 p.m. Eastern (5 to 7 p.m. Pacific)
In the film and TV world, your script’s format is just as important as your story.
Following the rules and conventions of proper formatting can make or break your screenplay. In fact, if you don't format your script correctly, chances are a reader, producer, or executive won’t make it past your first page.

That's why we're offering a Nuts and Bolts class specifically on the basics and fine points of formatting a script, including....

-
What is a slug line?
-
How do you know who is speaking in dialogue?
-
What software is best for screenwriting?

We're delighted that this class will be taught by Summiteer Alexandra Engelson, who will format a script live during the class.
"Every nuance of a script matters," Alex says. "No matter where you are with your story and what project or goal you're working toward, this class will be invaluable to your success as a screenwriter."
Here’s how the program will unfold.
Using one student’s script as a working example, Alex will format the screenplay live during the class, with plenty of opportunities to ask questions along the way.
On the first night we'll look at produced scripts such as Hidden Figures and an episode of Modern Family to learn about...
-
Where and how do you start a script?
-
How do you write slug lines, action lines, and dialogue?
-
When and how do you use parentheticals?
-
What's the difference between O.C. (Off Camera), O.S. (Off Screen), and V.O. (Voiceover)?
-
How do you determine and insert INT/EXT (Interior/Exterior) and Time of Day notations?
-
Why are these elements important, and how do they support your craft as a screenwriter?
-
How do these elements affect filming?
-
How do you write a montage or a flashback?

Night two we will review what we learned and together we will work on one of the student's scripts, to give you hands on practice!
Once you've registered, we'll be in touch to see if you'd like to have your script formatted during the class. Alex will choose just one script to work with.
