Hello from NJ! In the spirit of this “Introduce Yourself” section, here’s a bit about me … I’m Julianne, but I go by Julie or Jules. My parents thought it’d be clever to name all of us girls with a form of “anne” in our names: Joanne, Diane, Suzanne and me, the youngest of 5. My brother Christopher was somehow exempt from the whole anne thing, but I digress. I grew up spending most of my free time watching television, that is, when I wasn’t hanging out with the neighborhood kids till my mom rang the dinner bell. She was the only parent to utilize a dinner bell. My 10-year-old self found it mortifying. Now looking back I find it hilarious. Flash forward …
My husband and I live with our teen son in northern Jersey not far from Manhattan. I have worked from home much of the past two decades in the field of healthcare analytics. I research data and tell stories about it, true stories, to help inform and shape strategy that hopefully improves the affordability and quality of care for patients. Try making healthcare data stories engaging. It’s a unique skill.
I studied finance as an undergrad and got into theatre after graduation but I treated it like a hobby. I acted in and wrote short plays for fun and eventually founded a small theatre company and produced a few shows in the mid-2000’s before my son took center stage.
Outside of writing I enjoy ballroom dancing, biking, and volunteering with an urban outreach ministry serving in NYC.
My writing influences are mostly from television which has been my focus. I just completed the UCLA Professional Program’s Graduate Certificate in Writing for TV (online).
I have written a few pilots making the contest rounds to hopefully gain some good feedback and ideally some professional recognition. As it seems the industry is in a bizarre metamorphosis, I hear repeatedly that independent producing (on a manageable scale) is a smart approach to take to get one’s work “out there” / seen.
In addition to TV, I have written a Christmas rom-com which I’m working on revising with help from mentors and classes.
My immediate goals include improving my existing scripts and eventually being equipped to produce a short film. I’m working on a short story as a first step in that direction to help craft a compelling tale that I may translate into a screenplay to be filmed. I’m also enrolled in a filmmaking course to help achieve that goal.
Thanks for reading all that if you made it through! I’d love to hear from others and read about you all too!
